Hella KG and IBEO AS formed an industrial partnership with the intention to develop the ALASCA laser scanner, which serves the requirements of automotive applications. In the following the applications served by the ALASCA will be described in detail. Special attention will be paid to the ACC Stop and Go and Automatic Emergency Brake (AEB) applications. In this paper an advanced sensor technology together with its applications is presented. The Automotive LAser SCAnner ALASCA supports applications such as Automatic Emergency Brake (AEB), Stop and Go, Precrash, Parking Assistance, Pedestrian Detection and close range monitoring for commercial vehicles (e.g. 'Turning Assist'). These applications are based on the high efficiency of detection and tracking of the objects in the proximity of the car before a collision occurs. Furthermore, ALASCA has the potential to support the ambitious plans of the car manufacturers regarding automatic braking and steering of vehicles and accident-free driving in road traffic.
