In the past, steel mills had very few options when it came to the handling and transport of hot slag from the mill to the stockpile. General purpose equipment was requisitioned for the job, but was unable to handle the job effectively or efficiently. With the advent of the Hot Slag Body, operators are now able to transport hot slag from the mill to the stock pile in a traditional way, but without the burden of high maintenance costs, and unnecessary downtime. This transport option now allows operations flexibility in their material handling fleet, without making substantial capital investments in specific-duty transport equipment. In this paper, the concept and construction of a unique Hot Slag Body is described, that has been designed for off-highway trucks specifically for hauling extremely hot materials such as hot (non molten) slag. With the three component design of the Hot Slag Body being the skeleton, the load containing envelope and the coupling straps, the initial design estimated the body would last for five years without a substantial replacement of the load containing envelopes, and the skeletal superstructure would most likely work reliably without major maintenance for five to seven years. In early 2009, Philippi-Hagenbuch was contacted by the contractor that is using the first two Hot Slag Bodies that were produced. Originally these bodies went into service in Northwest Indiana in 1985, and through the years have made their way through various steel mills. Today, they reside on the East Coast, and have been in continuous service for over twenty-four years without a major rebuild. Hot Slag Bodies offer operators needing to transport hot, non-molten slag an efficient, cost effective way to use off-highway trucks in the handling and transport of the material from the blast furnace to the stock pile.
