The problems of weldability of heat-hardened rails of modern production using the flash-butt welding method, development of technologies and equipment for their joining have been investigated using rail steel types M76, K76T, E76F and U75V. The primary reason for investigations was the decrease in bending strength of welding seams. It was shown that some uncontrollable impurities in rail steels degrade their weldability through creating oxide layers by oxidizing titanium or vanadium as alloying additions, and by increasing the ferrite content and decarbonification of steel by oxygen dissolved in melted metal during welding. The new technology and equipment for resistant flash-butt welding with pulsed flushing of heat-hardened rails have been developed, providing the welded joints with mechanical properties within required standards.
