The notable improvement of vehicle surrounding recognition systems manifests the increasing importance of driver information (DIS) and driver assistance systems (DAS). Additionally the growing demand of mechatronic steering systems is leading to new functional degrees of freedom supporting this trend. This paper presents the simulation-supported function development process of lane-guidance functions. Therefore a full vehicle simulation environment is used. Out of these simulations the interaction between driver and function can be analysed in a first step. In a test vehicle the final application is realised by a rapid prototyping system. To ensure driver acceptance special attention is paid to the design of harmonic steering torque behaviour. The described functions realise lane guidance assistance in interaction with the driver. He always has to keep his hands on the steering wheel. With the information provided by the camera considering the low power demand of the steering system during lane guidance the technical realization of autonomous driving using steering angle control is possible. The driver is completely discharged from the task of steering. Because of legal reasons the implementation of an autonomous functionality in series on motorways and other public roads is still far away. In the near future autonomous vehicles will only be used on closed areas at low speeds.
