The report gives an overview of a new panel line of 4 to 20 mm thick panels, based on a gantry carrying a 10 kW fibre laser-hybrid welding head and a SAW (Submerged Arc Welding)-Tandem torch operating simultaneously on the run. The gantry allows weld lengths up to 17 m, the longest weld length achieved with IPG Photonics fiber laser up to date. A specially developed combined clamping and machining gantry for weld edge preparation allows the welding process without opening the clamps after machining. This results in a high quality, very stable welding process. The welded plates up to 36 x 16 m show no distortions reducing the time and the cost of following filled welds of stiffeners and of all the fitting processes. The stiffener mounting and welding gantry is operated by one operator only. The automated mounting process allows weld without previously tack welding. No reworking is required due to high accuracy of this panel line station, which is installed by IGM (Ingenieurtechnik und Maschinenbau GmbH Rostock) at one of the major shipyards in Italy. It is concluded, that the fiber laser is the best solution for the shipbuilding industry. High quality and accuracy, higher welding speed, lower costs for the parts help to bring this technology in force.
