The European Union set up an European management system of the rail traffic: the ERTMS system (European Rail Traffic Management System) to ensure, in full safety, trains circulations on different European networks. Here, methods, models and tools are presented dedicated to model ERTMS specifications. These models will be used to generate tests scenarios for the validation of ERTMS components based on functional requirements. The objective is to facilitate the interoperability through the mutual recognition of the ERTMS components between the member states by proposing tests scenarios generation enabling cover checking. A description of the ERTMS system, as the scientific context of this study, is given. Different modeling formalisms for ERTMS/ETCS specifications are presented. Finally, a model transformation technique from UML (Unified Modeling Language) to Petri Nets is followed.
