This paper has given a new generation pipeline welding system based on cutting edge design and practical welding technology. Key components of the system include the automatic six welding carriage system, the new automatic seam tracking algorithm for narrow welding groove and the wireless remote pendant. Each welding carriage has a unique laser vision sensor and arc sensor and two welding torches to maximize productivity. The laser vision sensor and the arc sensor were designed to locate the welding torch into the center of the welding groove before welding and to track the weld seam center during welding respectively. The system has the self diagnostic function which facilitates maintenance and repairs, and also has the network function via which the welding task data can be transmitted and the welding process data can be monitored. A combination of advanced electronics, software and practical and theoretical welding experience was all required in the developed system. While the system described is highly innovative, it is also extremely practical and reliable. The developed welding system in this study was successfully applied to the pipeline welding.
