Hybrid vehicles mark a milestone in the introduction of electric motors into large volume production cars. In hybrid power trains electric driving, brake energy recovery and engine shut off during stops offers a big potential for a significant fuel consumption reduction, especially for inner-city driving. To exploit the full potential of these hybrid features a focus has to be laid on the optimum layout of the hybrid power train. A further reduction of fuel consumption can be achieved by implementation of fuel cell APUs which allow for an extension of pure electric driving. Besides the benefits of an extended electric driving range the efficiency of energy generation for engine auxiliaries or electric consumers can be improved by implementing high efficient fuel cells, which are able to produce electric power over a long time and independent from battery capacity. A simulation of a parallel hybrid with fuel cell APU in a SUV class vehicle resulted in a fuel consumption reduction for urban cycles of 36% compared to a conventional power train and of 5.5% compared to a parallel hybrid power train.
