This paper discusses the latest generation of Al-Li alloys developed by Alcan Aerospace as plates, sheets and extruded sections. The fundamentals behind the choice of the new chemistries are highlighted, as well as the property balance generated on a selection of those alloys. Examples include alloys such as 2050 for medium to thick plates, 2196 for small and heavy sections, as well as 2198 for sheet. It is shown that Al-Li properties can match and often exceed those of the most advanced 2xxx and 7xxx alloys, with the additional benefits of lower density, higher modulus and much improved corrosion resistance.
