Alcan Aerospace has been very active in the recent past in developing low density Al-Li 3rd generation of alloys, in a collaborative effort with airframers. A2050 is one such alloy which has received commercial interest for its behaviour in the medium gauge range, where it outperforms reference alloys like 2024HDT or 2027. One of the challenges to the extensive use of Al-Li alloys by airframers has traditionally been the associated extra cost per kilo saved. This is the reason why work has been performed to decrease their buy-tofly ratio, among other cost reduction activities. Friction Stir Welding (FSW) has been proposed as a cost-effictive way for duch a decrease, allowing to adjust thickness of plates to the strict design needs. In an attempt to answer such a cost challenge, Alcan Aerospace has successfully performed FSW trials of 17 m long structural parts made of 2050-T3 alloy. Extensive mechanical and corrosion measurements were performed on the welded panel, after ageing to the T8 temper. These consisted in tension, compression, E-modulus, K1c, R-curve, Fatigue Crack Growth rate, Open Hole fatigue, Mastmaasis and Stress-Corrosion tests in various directions and test locations (nugget and HAZ); the results were compared with similar tests performed on the adjacent base-metal.
