For a long time the control surfaces of transport airplanes above a certain weight have been hydraulically powered. The most recent generation of in-service commercial transports is showing generalization of the electrical signaling of the hydraulic flight control actuators, known as Fly By Wire systems. The very new Airbus products now feature a hybrid flight control actuation power source distribution, associating electrically powered actuators with conventional FBW hydraulic servo controls. The intent of this paper is to highlight the drivers for this evolution, the presently selected configurations and possible trends for next aircraft generations.
