In the modern world, network flow problems arise in many different situations. For example, many people use a computer network every day for checking email or browsing the web. Production processes in factories involve supply chains, a particular form of a network. Furthermore, many people go to work by bus, train, or car every day and thus use traffic networks. Therefore, networks are important and their study is valuable. The main results of this thesis can be summarized as follows: The author devises a multi-class model on traffic flow networks that respects driver's destination preferences. He shows the relationship of the Aw-Rascle traffic flow model to a kinetic equation. He derives a framework for optimization on networks in which the dynamics is governed by scalar conservation laws. In this thesis the author is mainly concerned with macroscopic traffic flow models on networks. Additionally he investigates related optimal control problems which belong to a more general framework.
