This paper assesses the likely requirement of infrastructure - railway, road, power, water and ports - by the steel capacities likely to come up by 2011-12. The paper starts with an estimate of realizable capacity and production out of all the investment intentions put up by promoters. It then goes on to find out the gaps between the likely capacity in each infrastructure sector by 2011-12 and the projected requirement of the steel industry in that period. The analysis is done with special reference to the iron-ore rich states of Orissa, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh where most of the new capacities are to be concentrated.
