India has become a major hub for steel products. The demand outlook is quite bright. Number of steel projects are being proposed, both brown field as well as green field. Capacity additions are likely to match the future demand. Meanwhile, Government of India has come out with a statement that steel demand is going to touch the level of 180 - 200 Mt by 2019-20. Steel technocrats more ore less have similar views. Such high capacity augmentation requires sound support in terms of infrastructure like mining, power, water and transport. Infrastructure constraints, unless overcome, may jeopardise the whole process. This is a very big challenge before the Indian steel industry. With this backdrop, the present study is an enquiry into the infrastructure positioning of Indian steel industry and dealt the issues such as Demand - Supply situation and Forecasting and Infrastructure requirement of the steel industry such as iron ore, coking coal, limestone & dolomite, power, water, railways, roads, ports, human capital and engineering & consultancy needs of the industry. The results of the study indicate 'scarcity' with respect to most infrastructures and therefore, meticulous strategic planning is required to remove the constraints so as to achieve the targeted steel production by 2019-20.
