With the implementation of double hull structures on crude oil tankers the risk of oil spills has been reduced however new corrosion challenges occurred. Typical types and effects of corrosion in the crude oil environment and methods of corrosion protection inside crude oil cargo tanks on ships are described. The benefits of a defined coating performance standard for the protection of these crude oil cargo tanks, combined with the class notation CTC introduced by Germanischer Lloyd, are demonstrated.
