Parking is a maneuver that many drivers from beginners to skilled persons find troublesome and difficult. In situations where parking is carried out, obstacles (walls, road shoulders, other vehicles) exist in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle. The driver must appropriately judge the necessary steering operation that enables the vehicle to be guided to the targer parking space, while paying attention to nearby obstacles to ensure safety, and accurately maneuver the vehicle based on this judgement. In order to reduce the workload on the driver during parking, a steering control assistance system has been developed. In this paper, first the design concept of the system is mentioned, then an outline of the system configuration and steering control method for realizing this assistance system is described. In addition, the override control function, which gives priority to the driver when he himself operates the steering wheel even during system control, and its effectiveness, will be clarified. By verifying this control effects using a vehicle equipped with the system, it has been confirmed that override control prevents steering operation by the system from interferring with the driver's steering operation, enabling the driver to steer the steering wheel with the equivalent torque as that in usual steering operation.
