The quality of recyclates and hence the recycling rate of a product is largely affected by the liberation of materials during shredding, which have been connected in the design. Therefore the prediction of liberation behaviour is of crucial importance to the calculation of recycling/recovery rates. A fuzzy rule based approach is developed to describe the liberation behaviour of material from automobiles and hence the recycling rate, linking material combinations and connections in product design with the particle composition and degree of liberation after shredding. This approach permits a description of the liberation mechanism of materials during shredding as a function of design. The heuristic rules for this were developed over many years by the analysis and sampling of scrap samples from various shredders. This realizes a model basis for Design for Recycling. This paper will discuss this model based Design for Recycling. Furthermore, this paper will discuss among others the following: (i) the link to legislation, (ii) legal proof of recycling rate by the car manufacturer by this approach, (iii) the impact of these models on recycling technology, (iv) the impact on the formulation of (future) legislation that suites future car designs (hence provide constructive criticism and a theoretical basis for the adjustment of recycling legislation), and (v) the impact (or limitations and barriers) of future recycling options. All these aspects can now be a-priori tested and scientifically certified during the design stage of the car. Thus, a legal and scientific basis is created for estimating the recyclability of newly designed (super light) cars.
