In recent years the complexity of software systems has been growing rapidly. In order to control this development, increasingly formal verification is being used, enabling one to demonstrate that software satisfies given criteria. Providing proof of correctness is particularly important for safety critical systems. Among these are electronic interlockings, used in railway engineering to monitor and control the logic of safety-related components. This paper examines the principles of formal verification of interlocking software by model checking, focusing on interlockings based on programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
