An integrated safety concept is the combination of active and passive safety systems. Active systems, which are designed to reduce the risk of an accident happening, include the ABS and ESP systems. Audi offers additionally a number of optional driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, Audi lane assist, Audi side assist, adaptive light, daytime running lights with LED technology, dynamic suspension with damping control and dynamic steering. A high degree of passive safety is a key development goal for a premium vehicle. A central focus is a high level of protection in a real accident situation. The passive safety systems in the Audi A4 are designed to keep the risk of injury to a minimum in the event of an accident. In the paper the seat belt restraint system, the head restraints, seat-belt reminders, the Isofix child-seat mountings, lashing eyelets in the luggage compartment, rigid backrests of the front and rear seats, airbag control systems are described. The frontal impact protection is outlined discussing: 1. robustness due to combination of structure and restraint systems, 2. demand on individual occupant protection, 3. adaptive restraint systems. Side impact protection and rear-end impact protection are described. At last, passive and active pedestrian protection are discussed.
