The present work consists on finite element analysis of system wheel-rail for carts used on pelletizing process in order to maximize the life in-service, increasing the period of the maintenance tasks. Thus, the stress and strain gradients in the rail were obtained under loads due to the weight of complete system, which includes the cart and the pellets. The system wheel-rail was analyzed considering the wheel as rigid element and rail as flexible element. The interaction between the wheel and the rail was modeled using contact elements in order to simulate the loads transferred from the wheel to the rail. The loads due to the weight of the complete system were calculated, using a global finite element model. After, the forces and the moments of the most critical wheel were applied in a local finite element model. The numerical results show that the rail is not designed for the occurrences of overloads, as well as, for fatigue. Changes on geometry of the rail and a new selection of material are required in order to maximize the life in-service, increasing the period of the maintenance tasks.
