This study focuses on a direct injection hydrogen engine with the aim of obtaining high-efficiency and zero emissions. This report presents the effects of hydrogen injection and ignition timings on improving engine performance. Experiments were conducted using a single-cylinder test engine and a high-pressure gas injector placed at the center portion of the cylinder head. The results obtained in this study are described below. Combustion regimes and NOx emissions of homogeneous hydrogen/air mixtures are significantly influenced by the excess air ratios of the mixtures. As hydrogen injection timings are delayed, the heterogeneity of the mixtures increases and the combustion regimes of lean hydrogen mixtures are influenced by the timing periods, i.e., the time difference between injection and ignition. On the other hand, ignition timings have almost no effect on the heat release rates of relatively rich hydrogen mixtures. High thermal efficiency of hydrogen combustion are achieved by optimization of injection and ignition timings.
