Sales of hybrid vehicle are becoming more significant every year. The introduction of the Toyota Prius, almost ten years ago, changed the spectrum in the automotive powertrain market importantly. The layout of the powersplit hybrid drivetrain in the Prius deviates strongly from state-of-the-art transmission technology. Another trend, especially in Europe, is to further improve the efficiency and hybridize layshaft transmission technology (manuals). Examples of such hybrids are based on the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) and Dual Clutch Technology (DCT). The use of pulley-type Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT) as the basis for a (parallel) hybrid is seen especially in Japanese models such as the Honda IMA Civic and the Toyota Estima MPV Hybrid. The Prius operates using an electric CVT principle, whereas the Honda uses a mechanical pulley-type CVT in parallel with an electric motor. The CVT principle in the Prius excels in driving agility and fuel economy but is relatively highly priced particularly as of the expensive power electronics and battery pack. The Honda IMA uses mature and low cost pulley-CVT technology in combination with a much smaller electric machine. This saves cost though overall performance is penalized, especially when combined with a down-sized engine. Drivetrain Innovations is developing a hybrid drivetrain module that can be fitted in a pulley-type CVT transmission housing and combines the benefits of both the Prius and IMA hybrids. The new hybrid module integrates a novel 'mechanical motor/generator' with an 'electric motor/generator,' inside a standard pulley- CVT. The hybrid module can also be integrated with a 4-, 5- or 6- speed automatic transmission (AT), automated manual transmission (AMT) or the recently introduced Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). When fitted to state-of-the-art CVT technology, the drivetrain is estimated to gain the same fuel economy as the Toyota Prius for one fifth of the production cost. This paper describes the developments concerning the hybrid applications for CVT, AT and DCT as they are particularly suited for the North American automotive market.
