Even small improvements in the top speed of large powerboats can give a manufacturer a significant competitive advantage. Current designs are probably at the point of diminishing returns for increases in power, so some other means of increasing speed is necessary. Because these boats typically have top speeds in excess of 100 mph, aerodynamic modifications offer a means of increasing speed for minor changes in weight and production cost. We fitted a 39 foot boat with simple fairings and vortex generators and were able to observe a repeatable increase in speed of at least 1 mph.
