Vehicle interior noise is one of the critical factors to customers, and it is imperative to represent the multidimensional and dynamic nature of noise effectively and efficiently. Due to the several sources of noise, several metrics have been developed and utilised. It is also important to link the noise characteristics to customer preference. These interconnected subsystems are often outsourced to independent component manufacturers, and the integration of these subsystems is becoming a critical issue. If the specifications for the outsourced components are managed individually, they are within the specification limits. However, if they are considered simultaneously, they could fall outside the control limits. Special circumstances exist in vehicle design and engineering. Many design variables are inter-connected, and the integration of these subsystems is critical, which requires that all important design variables that are handled by various groups should be included in prediction models if possible. Unfortunately, not everyone in an organisation is necessarily aware of or can fully understand the interactions of all subsystems, the consequences of design changes, and their impact on overall vehicle integration. Due to the special circumstances mentioned above, the widely used MLR may not be a useful tool to link customer preference to predictor variables and to represent the co-varying structure in predictor variables. Simply put, things in nature are dependent. PCA and PCR are applied to understand the co-varying structure among noise metrics and to correlate the latent structure to customer preference. They are useful in order to handle the special circumstances in vehicle development and are valuable methods in understanding the noise performance of vehicles.
