Diesel passenger cars have a substantial market share in Europe which is mainly due to their excellent performance and low fuel consumption. Also the NVH behaviour is improving continuously. During transient operating condition however, many diesel engines still produce an unpleasant loud clattering sound. Based on common investigations at FEV Motorentechnik and Renault an appropriate clatter noise metrics for transient condition and a corresponding testing procedure was elaborated. By use of vehicle interior noise simulation method (VINS) the transfer paths of transient clatter noise for the vehicle interior noise were separated serving for an inverse target setting and cascading regarding vehicle interior clatter noise intensity. In summary the clatter noise is significantly reduced by elimination of P/T top side path, even though this path has no significant contribution to overall level. The main effect is in the frequency band at 1600 Hz. Clatter noise is further reduced by elimination of the P/T right side path (2 kHz) or by the elimination of the structure-borne paths left & top mount, x-direction (main effect on 1050 Hz). With combinations of this noise path eliminations, the test vehicle interior noise can be significantly improved, but nevertheless the character of the excitation should be modified, e.g. by different calibration of the engine.
