As part of a larger investigation into the use of remotely sensed satellite (RSS) images, a systematic study of the open issues related to invisible digital watermarking (IDW) of such images has been undertaken. An initial study established that IDW of RSS images does not fit easily into either the digital imagery or relational database domain when attempting watermarking for copyright protection and that a new approach was needed. In a subsequent study a new watermarking approach was proposed that improves the usefulness of the watermarked image by focusing on the application use of the image after watermarking. In this paper the authors present a new near-lossless constraint. It is shown that by applying this constraint when developing IDW algorithms, near optimal results are achieved in terms of distortion reduction. It is also shown that in some special cases the results are optimal.
