A key fob configured to: find the signal strength 511 of received polls from a base station; determine, based on the signal strengths that the received polls have: increased 513b, decreased, or levelled off 513a; and if the signal strength has increased issue a poll response or if the signal strength has levelled off not issue the poll response. When the signal strength decreases then the key fob may not issue the poll response. It may be determined that the signal strength of the received polls have levelled off by a determination that the signal strength of a predetermined number of received polls are within an upper 514 and lower 515 boundary. An increase, decrease, or levelling off of the signal strength corresponds to movement of the key fob towards, away, or a constant distance from a vehicle. The signal strength can be determined by RSSI or by time of flight. The invention conserves the battery life of the key fob.
