An overview about the approach to develop a restraint system for the train driver is given. The boundary conditions and special railway requirements which have to be involved in the development are specified. The simulation model construction of the drivers cab and a selection of analysed restraint system components can be found within this paper. To offer a sufficient protection for the train driver in defined crash scenarios, the use of an air bag in combination with a knee bag is recommended. The knee bag reduces the pelvis forward movement in an early crash phase. It also ensures the prevention of the hazardous contact between the driver's abdomen and the desk edge. An air bag protects the rotating drivers torso from hitting the interior components. During the next project phase, the conclusions drawn above are to be verified by sled-testing.
