Vehicle accidents on the road occasionally are accompanied with fire burning in the engine compartment or nearby the fuel tank. This article discusses an automatic fire extinguishing system being facilitated in the vehicle, the fire can be sensed and put out within seconds. The system comprises a smart UV/IR dual band flame sensing element, a processing unit, and proprietary fire suppressant canisters. The fire sensors detect both ultraviolet and infrared spectra from the fire; the processing unit decides if it is a real and hazardous flame through a patented computing algorithm. The fire suppressant device is triggered by the activated signal from the processing unit, and pyrotechnical charges are burned to give off large amount of nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Experimental results show that either Class A or Class B fire can be extinguished within 3 meters by small fire suppressant element. Large fire suppressant canisters yield better capabilities on both range and activated period. Numerical simulation has been done on flow pattern of the exhaust gas plume. The numerical result of the flow field offers a better opportunity for designers to delineate through effective improvement.
