Automotive glazing is now expected to provide more than just perfect visibility - it contains additional functions, such as heating and aerials. The increasing differentiation and individualisation of vehicle concepts requires more technical features, which need new solutions in materials and surfaces. The integration of new functions is the subject of current research and development activities. The various coating processes represent key technologies in this field and will allow the integration of new properties such as functional surfaces and variable transparency. Electroehromic systems are already in use in mirrors and prevent driver dazzle by automatically shading the mirror. By suitably up-scaling and further development these systems are expected to be used for automotive glazing. Functional coatings have specific effects on surface wettability and on light and energy transmission of glazing. Although many technologies are known on a technical level for some time, their integration into vehicles often reveal difficulties. The industry makes major efforts to overcome these difficulties and to meet criteria given by laws and customers' expectations regarding quality and cost. Further development of materials and coating processes will lead to a better fulfilment of customers' expectations of intelligent glass.
