Described is the specific principles of application of crashworthiness design to locomotives and the technical concept and validation procedure applied to the new crashworthy locomotives TRAXX. Firstly, an overview about the state-of-the-art of locomotive crashworthiness is given. The operational conditions influencing the crashworthiness of locomotive-hauled passenger trains, the technical locomotive specific aspects and their impact on the crashworthiness design are described. Solutions have to be found under strict weight limitations and have to consider the economic efficiency. A further chapter gives an overview about the crashworthiness design of the new TRAXX locomotives, their design conditions, the concept of controlled energy absorption and the different features additionally contributing to the crashworthiness. The design also incorporates means of improved protection for the locomotive driver in case of collisions with lorries at level crossings. Finally, the validation procedure and the verification of the analysis model are described in detail. The crashworthiness design concept was validated and the crash analysis model for the simulation of the design collision scenarios verified by a dynamic crash test to be absorbed by the vehicle end structure. A reliable prediction of the real behaviour by the simulation with regard to essential crash parameters, regions and modes of deformation could be achieved, which confirms the high accuracy of prediction of the crash simulation.
