The main goal of lightweight concepts are the improvement of cost efficiency and production processability. To guarantee still a sufficient operating safety of these new designed components an increasing effort during the development process is required. Numerical structural durability analysis methods give us the possibility to identify the changed fatigue sensitivity and behaviour of these new designs to the different service loads and assembly conditions. For example rotating suspension components are loaded by forces from different directions and varied combinations caused by the diverse driving manoeuvres. In a joint project a new designed light weight heavy truck wheel hub was investigated to its structural durability sensitivity to the different loading conditions, especially to the load cases braking and accelerating, using a special numerical concept. In the paper used methods and the effects on the development process for future design concepts are presented. On an example of a new designed heavy truck wheel hub a numerical parameter study with adapted methods and design criteria was carried out to demonstrate the differences. Necessary modifications for the development process could be derived and could be applied in new projects to guarantee the operating safety of rotating suspension components.
