On 24 March 2006, the Board of Directors of Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) approved the implementation of European Train Control System (ETCS) on the entire railway network in Switzerland. ETCS will replace the legacy systems ZUB and SIGNUM on the North-South corridor (Lötschberg/Simplon and Gotthard lines) by 2012 and on the rest of the network by 2015. The aim is to simplify network access and to reduce costs for rolling stock by prevention of expensive double equipment. Swiss Federal Office for Transport has set 2016 as a target to access Switzerlands entire standard-gauge network with ETCS-only onboard equipment.
