The most important requirements on the textile floor covering are: visual appeal and harmoniuous match with the surface of other textile linings inside the car, soft feel with a textile surface structure, good cleaning properties, adaptability to moulded parts that are fitted exactly, satisfaction of complex acoustic requirements so that interior noise is reduced and contribution to the general objective of overall car weight reduction. As far as the fibres processed are concerned, the main polymers in tufted or needle-punched floor coverings for cars are polyamide and polypropylene. Development trends in textile floor coverings for car interiors are recyclable monomaterial systems, e.g. 100 % polypropylene, roughened warp knit fabric as a substitute for tufted fabric, textile floor linings with polyurethane foam backing, use of finer fibres or filaments in the textile structures with highly effective acoustic properties, composite systems as shaped, lightweight floor elements with a nontextile intermediatew layer incorporating pores; the same acoustic properties as with textile carpeting are supposed to be achieved at the same time that weight is reduced by 30 %. Extension of the finishing of textile surfaces into shaped linings by means of sewing, welding, laminating, back spraying, back foaming.
