A high corrosion resistant stainless steel 'NSSC 260A' has been developed for chemical cargo tanker, which is more corrosion resistant than SUS316LN and 317LN (1). The nominal chemical composition is 22 mass% Cr-16Ni-3.5Mo-2Cu-0.2N. This steel has been designed to exhibit superior corrosion resistance for sulfic acid, crude phosphoric acid and salt water, by means of that general corrosion index GI (=-(Cr)+3.6(Ni)+4.7(Mo)+11.5(Cu)) is larger than to and that pitting corrosion index PI (=(Cr)+3.3(Mo)+16(N))is larger than 35. As the results, compared with SUS316LN, which are used for chemical cargo tanker usually, the corrosion rate of this steel is one by thirty in 50 mass% sulfic acid, the black discoloring in air phase of tank loaded crude phosphoric acid is fairly supressed, and the corrosion resistance in salt water is equal to the grade S31803; duplex stainless steel. And also, a flux cored wire: FCW FC-317LNCU has been developed for semi-automatic CO2 gas welding, which exhibits good performance on welding site and is fairly cost saving. It was also confirmed that the weld joints of thick plates have result in good properties. The steel can be supplied as thick plates up to 3000 mm in width, and has been supplied for a chemical cargo tanker built in 2004.
