The New Mazda 6 MPS is set as the 'ultimate Zoom-Zoom sedan' and was developed having a concept of a 'sophisticated high-performance sedan'. To enhance driving fun, the powertrain goals were set 'linear acceleration' and 'good responsiveness' in addition to 'absolute acceleration', so a high boost turbocharged DISI engine was developed with the world's highest output of 84.5 kW / l and a torque of 168 Nm / l as production DISI engine, it bases on Mazda's current all Aluminum 2.3-l MZR engine. MZR 2.3-l DISI TURBO was developed with challenging targets: - high output performance equivalent to a conventional 3.5-l engine, which it should replace, - high fuel efficiency similar to a 2.3-l natural aspirated (NA) port fuel injection(PFI) engine, - low exhaust emissions compliant with emission legislation in all major markets globally. A brief explanation of the engine specifications is outlined. How to achieve the targets by combining high boost turbo with DISI and how to resolve the issues connected with a high boost turbo is described. Then the impact of using an all aluminium engine for high boost DISI turbo and the improvement from base engine is discussed. How to deliver high power with an all aluminum engine is described. The following accomplishments were made through the development of this engine: - A DISI system was developed that perfectly works in combination with a high boost turbocharger. - Benefit of the engine's performance improvement was made clear that was delivered by the synergy between DISI and high boost turbo. - A light weight and compact all aluminum engine was developed that offers high output of DISI turbo.
