Downsizing with direct injection and turbocharging demonstrates strong potential concerning fuel economy and CO2-emissions. It is shown and discussed in this paper how this important target can be achieved and which measures will meet all demands necessary for future internal combustion engines with direct injection and turbocharging. Downsizing of SI engines with homogeneous mixture preparation may lead to a reduction of fuel consumption of about 10 %. This is similar to engines which are currently on the market and are operating with stratified lean combustion without boosting and a maximum fuel injection pressure of 200 bar. Actually, spray-guided direct injection SI engines with stratified combustion should have much higher potential for reductions of fuel consumption. Investigations with 600 bar injection pressure and theoretical estimates have shown that more than 25 % improvement is possible. Additional boosting of the intake air and gasoline direct injection with stratified combustion increases this potential for fuel consumption reduction. Investigations with extremely high injection pressures up to 1000 bar have already shown significant reductions in fuel consumption of about 15 % at the upper level of the stratified operating range. Consequently, in the lower part load operating range, the reduction of fuel consumption can be assumed to be higher than 30 % compared to a naturally aspirated engine with a homogeneous mixture. For the future, it is necessary to increase research and development in the field of high pressure injection systems, in high pressure turbocharging, and in the understanding of this completely new engine combustion process and its application for future passenger car engines.
