Gas hydrates are a significant commercial fuel source of the 21st century, helping in resolving petroleum shortage. Development of methane deposits could readily improve fuel shortages and significantly suppress international violence by reducing political sensitivity to energy. Hydrate deposits can be detected by an undersea television system towed by cable or on submersibles. For the most part, hydrates are found at shallower depths, reducing the lift distance required. Methane hydrate deposits occur in frozen mounds on the seafloor that can be detected visually with television cameras towed by an exploration vessel or carried by free-swimming remotely controlled craft. The knowledge to locate, delineate, and evaluate hydrate deposits is readily available. There are all the indications that these functions can be accomplished by applying available techniques and modifying them to the hydrate's specific requirements.
