In a long-term perspective until 2050 Germany will be confronted with fundamental demographic changes (e.g. shrinking and ageing of residential population). These developments have not been considered yet in the transport infrastructure planning process. Demographic changes will influence traffic volume and performance, trip purposes and modal choice as well as spatial distribution of traffic volume. The Scientific Advisory Board recommends putting more emphasis on demographic changes and especially their local and regional implications. These issues should be regarded when designing transport policy strategies and deciding on transport infrastructure, transport services and traffic management. This will considerably contribute to a more effective, efficient and sustainable transport policy.
