The results of a large series of impact tests on Shuttle test articles have been obtained. To date, the results have been very promising that an impact detection system on the Shuttle might be possible. Foam impact and hypervelocity impacts are readily detectable, and localization is possible. Furthermore, we are hopeful that we may be able to correlate signal parameters with impact parameters The data analysis is still very preliminary, and much work is still remaining for the collection of additional data as well as for data analysis. Significant work remains in characterizing ice projectile impacts, ablator projectile impacts, and hypervelocity impacts on realistic RCC and tile specimens. A significant question that still exists is, 'What is the background noise level on the Shuttle at the frequencies which our experiments cover?' The answer to that question will require a flight experiment. The initial plans are being made on the development of an instrument package to be installed on leading edge of the next flight.
