Road traffic accidents in the European Union annually claim more than 40,000 lives and leave more than 1.7 million people injured. Considering these figures, the European Commission, national governments, the vehicle manufacturers and other stakeholders have promoted over the years a number of projects and programs with the common goal of reducing the number of fatalities and injuries in road traffic accidents SAFELANE is a subproject within PReVENT Integrated Project, aiming at reducing the number of lane departure related accidents. Recently, first Lane Departure Warning Systems (LDWS) have been introduced to the market and are today offered by several vehicle manufactures as optional choice on their vehicles. The goal of SAFELANE system is to improve the functionality of existing lane departure warning and lane keeping systems beyond the state of the art for use in commercial and passenger vehicles on motorways and rural roads. The paper is organized as follows: first, the system concept is presented starting from the problem domain and concluding with the solution provided by SAFELANE. At the same time, the innovation of the system is pointed out. Moreover, the sensor system is presented and the relevant modules, whose role is to implement the SAFELANE solution and tasks. Finally, the future steps towards the demonstration of SAFELANE activities are pointed out. The combination of the complementary functions Adaptive Lane Keeping Support (SAFELANE) and Lane Change Assistance/Lateral Collision warning (LATERALSAFE) will provide in the future an integrated driver support system for handling critical lateral support in all traffic scenarios. The project is coordinated by Volvo Technology; it started in February 2004 and will terminate in January 2007.
