Future Automotive High Temperature applications will require electronic components which are able to operate at 175 deg C ambient temperature. The authors have shown here new technology developments which enable the design of Low Volt Axial Aluminum Capacitors with life times of 500 - 1000 h at 175 deg C and 5000 h at 150 deg C for voltages up to 63 V. Tests at 175 deg C can also be used as accelerated tests for the Life Test behaviour at 150 deg C. The Life times at 175 deg C and 150 deg C conditions are mainly determined by the drying out mechanism well-known for Non-Solid Aluminum Capacitors. Failure modes related to electrical loading have been sufficiently and successfully suppressed. Furthermore this new technology enables a Temperature Shock Test of -55 deg C/175 deg C with 1 h cycle and switchover time < 10 s for at least 1500 cycles. This once more proofs the high quality and reliability of the new sealing technology. Reliability testing of products at 175 deg C has to be extended further in order to provide statistically proven figures.
