The replacement of mechanical systems, such as steering, braking and engine valve timing, by electromechanically driven actuators has led to a rapid increase in the use of high current switchmode converters in automotive environments. To develop the necessary Electro Magnetic Interference filter components, BCcomponents has worked together with specific automotive customers to develop several 'noncatalogue' products, resulting in new series of longlifetime high-temperature electrolytic capacitors specially designed to withstand automotive conditions. In addition to meeting the required electrical parameters, the development of these new capacitors has required a closer look at mechanical construction and thermal behaviour. Developing these custom solutions means understanding system requirements as well as component requirements, and marrying the two together in a way that guarantees overall system performance, manufacturability and price. The example of the capacitor array for EMI filtering in ISG systems has proven that BCcomponents can meet the new requirements of the most demanding 42V automotive applications. Application of its advanced ELCAP technology can provide similar high-performance solutions in virtually every other area of automotive electronics.
