For an automobile air conditioning system, solar radiation control at low ambient temperatures is important. It has been confirmed that there is a high amount of solar radiation when the sun is shining from a low altitude. The authors tested a vehicle equipped with a system that adjusts the air conditioning outlet temperature based on the change of the amount of radiation energy contacting the passenger with the position of the sun. It was confirmed that even if the passenger receives an uneven amount of solar radiation, it is possible to retain a constant level of comfort. The heat load from solar radiation on the vehicle body is nearly uniform regardless of the direction of solar radiation, and higher solar altitudes lead to larger heat loads. The position of the sun with the maximum amount of solar radiation energy contact is different for high solar altitudes and low solar altitudes. It was confirmed that current automatic air conditioning systems do not provide optimal solar correction corresponding to the position of the sun. By controlling the adjustment of the air conditioning outlet temperature based on the amount of radiation energy contacting the passenger from the position of the sun, it is possible to maintain a uniform comfort level for all solar direction angles even during times of low solar altitude where the ambient temperature is also low.
