The precise calculation of the air conditioning load in a dynamic situation existing in an automotive vehicle is rendered more complicated on account of the solar gain through the glazing material of the vehicle, an entity which can change with the latitude of the place, the turbidity of the atmosphere, and above all altitude of the sun, the last factor depending not only on the time of the year but also on the time of the day. At best the calculation can take the maximum possible solar gain into account under the most adverse conditions, in such a manner that the vehicle air-conditioning system is able to cope with solar gain less than maximum. A mathematical analysis of the solar gain problem is made assuming ideal conditions, as the alternative of realistic conditions are almost incapable of a meaningful solution. Curves are presented showing the estimated solar gain as a function of the time for varying valves of a parameter which accounts for the surface area of the vehicle, its mass, and the heat loss factor from the vehicle to the surroundings.
