Generic duty cycles have been used to design and evaluate powertrains of hybrid electric vehicles. Our research indicates that a duty cycle depends on a powertrain's configuration. Thus, using a generic duty cycle may result in an overestimation on the selection of power sources and a false estimate on vehicle performance. A simulation tool based on powertrain dynamics, configuration, and component specifications was created to generate configuration dependent duty cycles. A comparison between the generated duty cycle and a generic one is presented. The effect of using different duty cycles on selection of power sources is discussed.
