A new generation of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) is being currently developed at the Florida Institute of Technology for environmental impact assessment, integrated coastal zone management, and dangerous substance detection. Researchers at the institute are developing some non-traditional methods of navigation, along with research in neural networks for dealing with sensor fusion and feature recognition in the underwater environment. The project consists of two consecutive phases, which include the development and integration of all components into a functional tool, and the scientific phase for testing and demonstration through a series of surveys addressing important applications of different marine ecosystems. The AUV to be used for the survey is the Kamikaze AUV, which along with the implementation of a robust control system, is designed to use a neural network control system due to its advantages in fusing multi-sensor information. The structure of the Kamikaze is tubular, with easy access to the batteries and the McLane Research 12 inch diameter vehicle control and scientific pressure housings. The entire system is managed by a control and supervision system using a combination of traditional feedback and neural network control system.
