Mobility is deeply integrated into society. Technological change has made it a major driver of growth which has shaped our lives for more than 1 1/2 centuries. But is it going to move us safely into the new era of a knowledge-based society? Or is its role as an engine of growth set to wane? Using input-output-techniques, the present article looks at physical mobility in the context of the changes final demand and inter-industry relations are likely to undergo over the next 1 1/2 decades. With present experience suggesting that the pace of physical mobility will slow down, it comes to the conclusion that while the share of mobility-oriented expenditure by private households in private consumption will shrink, there are little signs of a weakening of mobility's role in the production process. As a result however and in spite of industry's continued dependence on transport mobility-related value-added is unlikely to keep pace with the growth of the economy in the years to come.
