Within the framework of the EC-Growth project CONVURT (CONtrol of Vibrations from Underground Railway Traffic), insertion loss models are under development to predict changes in vibration levels due to physical changes in and around underground railway tunnels and buildings. The aim is to account for the essential dynamic behaviour of the structures concerned with models that are suitable for use on a standard personal computer, so that rational decisions about track and building design can be made without the need for extensive site investigations or structural detail. This paper describes the progress made to date in developing models of a building and an underground railway tunnel. An overview of the models is presented, together with some sample results.
