An electric double-layer capacitor system has been developed for the Honda FCX fuel cell vehicle. This capacitor displays the highest level of performance for a capacitor cell known to date, with a specific power density of more than 1,500 W/kg and a specific energy density of 3.9 Wh/kg. This high-power capacitor system offers more than 30% higher output power and more than twice the power density of the nickel-metal hydride batteries used in hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) at an equivalent system voltage, and satisfies automotive power requirements.
